Have you ever asked yourself “What am I good at?” or “What is it that I truly enjoy doing?”
Sometimes it’s difficult to pinpoint what it is that we are good at in life, or even what we just simply enjoy doing.
Some people may naturally give people goose bumps just with the sound of their voice, while others may know how to effortlessly capture the attention of a room.
If these questions have ever come across your mind, I’m here to tell you that you are not alone. Whether you’re seeking fulfillment in life, or just looking for a hobby you can enjoy and proudly claim, there is something out there for everyone.
This article is intended to help you navigate, find, and develop your passion.
1. Ask Yourself
What do you find yourself talking about the most, spending the most time doing, watching, or researching?
Is there something that you could do for hours and seem to get lost in it. Is there something that you do that makes you smile or brings you happiness? If so, then it’s possible that you may already have a hobby without even realizing it.
Take a moment to think of the things that you do most often or find yourself gravitating towards. Home in on it, but if that doesn’t apply to you or you still don’t know, that’s okay, we have a few more things that you can try.
2. Think back to your younger self
Before your life took a spiraling turn towards adulting, it’s time to think back to when you were a kid where bills, expenses, and debt probably weren’t the first things on your mind.
Imagine your younger self from elementary school and work your way up to high school. Look closely and remember what are the activities that you enjoyed mostly.
Maybe you participated in sports, maybe you enjoyed acting or dancing. Maybe you were into computers and video games.
No matter how small or short the activity was, if you’ve done it before, List them down on a piece of paper. If you can’t think of any that’s okay, keep reading.
3. Find something NEW
Now there may be a good chance that you may have outgrown some of those interest from your younger days and that is OK. Growth is good!
Or maybe you didn’t participate in many things growing up, that is OK too. A reason why you may not know what you’re good at could very much be because you simply were never introduced to it.
Imagine trying something completely new and being better than other people who’ve either also just started or have been doing it for a while. It happens more often than you think.
It’s almost like a spark in the driest part of a California forest, you’ll ignite a sense of accomplishment, curiosity, and fulfillment that will drive you towards getting better at it.
But you don’t know what you don’t know right?
Check out this list of over 100 known hobbies that people have known to love and enjoy from hobbyhelp.com.
Go through a good-sized list, I’d say of at least 10 hobbies and mark or write down all the ones that you have an interest. Even if you don’t think you can do it right now, write it down.
At the end of this you should have a decent sized list of things that you have even the slightest interest in. You can then sort them from most interested to least interested.
4. Try and Apply
Now comes the fun part. As one of my old coworkers used to tell me “Never try, never know”. It’s time to try these hobbies out to see what you have most enjoyment doing.
Start with the ones that you have the most interest in. Research it, watch YouTube videos, find out if there are opportunities to get involved in it in your local area. This is where you may need to come out of your comfort zone.
Pull the trigger and just start! Talk to the people around you who share that Similar interest. What better way to learn, than from people who have more experiences to share which could help you gauge if it is for you or not. I
guarantee that when you do find something that you really enjoy doing and it fulfills you; you will always thank yourself for getting started.
5. Don’t Give Up
If you enjoyed this hobby but there are some aspects of it that you consider challenging, or don’t think that you can accomplish it. Resist all urges to give up or quit. Embrace the challenge, because you will get past those challenges just like everyone else who started and stuck it through did.
Now I’m not saying if you absolutely hated it, to force yourself to like it. If you absolutely know that something isn’t for you, then its OK you have a good-sized list, cross it out and move on to the next.
Even if you get down to the bottom of the list you should feel very accomplished. You set out and tried all these different hobbies, putting yourself out there and learned a thing or two about those spaces.
Might have even made your life a little more interesting, with stories for days to share to friends. Keep trying until you find something you like. Who knows your hobby might just be trying out new hobbies!
